The Times | Brussels airs pollution fears over biomass energy plants

Conall Bolger Head of Ireland was quoted by The Times discussing the future of coal in Ireland after the European Commission raised concerns about the potential impact on Irish air quality of the government’s plan to meet 2030 climate and renewable energy targets.

Conall explained that Moneypoint, a coal-fired plant, was not essential for future adequate electricity supply in Ireland as a system of capacity auctions — guaranteed payments for planned future supply — was supporting new gas generation. However, this leaves Ireland dependent on gas from abroad.
