S&P Global | UK plan for post-Brexit carbon pricing sticks closely to EU emissions system

S&P Global featured Tom Edwards’ comments on the UK’s plan for carbon pricing after the UK leaves the EU in January 2021. Following a yearlong consultation on the future of carbon pricing after Brexit, the government said that it proposed to set up a U.K.-wide Emissions Trading System, or ETS, with an emissions cap that is 5% lower than that of the EU ETS.

Tom Edwards, senior modeller explained that this 5% reduction in the total emissions cap was a good start but he emphasised the importance of how quickly the government further tightens the screws.
